Ideas for my music video include having live performance mixed with a story.
I would like to have elements of narrative throughout my music video

Story Board

This is the story board of my music video. There are various camera angles that are going to be used, the most common is close up angle on the guitar. During the video there is going to be an overlaying effect. There is going to be use of daylight and night time.

References

In my video, I have referenced Ed Sheeran in some parts, mainly from his video Lego House. In the video they use slow motion when the main character is walking and miming to the song. In my video I will be filming a lot of it outside, the weather does not have to be perfect as I can use objects such as light reflectors to get better lighting.

Another artists I have referenced in my music video is Ben Howard, his video for Keep your head up is filmed outside and uses nature and other aspects in his video.

Test Footage

In this footage I tested using slow motion to make the video look a bit more interesting and shows that it is not in real time. I want to use this effect in the
beginning and middle of my music video.

Test Footage

This footage was used to test whether using fast motion would work. I may not use this effect as it doesn't suite the overall theme of the video, but it was good to test it out.

Test Footage

This test footage was to practise getting the music in time with the actual footage. I used the introduction of the song which lasts approximately 4 seconds.

Test footage

I practised using the overlaying technique this makes the video have a ghostly effect, this could work well on my video as it is a slow relaxing song and this effect could make it more interesting.

Correspondents from bands

September-
Me: Would you be interested in performing in a music video for my media project?
Jack  Watson: Yeah my band isn’t together anymore but me and Michael could do one for you

Making of videos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px6nTLFD6do
This video by Ed Sheeran has aspects of live performance and it also has shots from different sets. Such as a live performance arena and outdoor scenery.
It's very organised in the way it is set out, I could use this for my music video as I am filming in different sets. They think a lot about the camera angles.

The video by The script has a clear storyline and it shown throughout the film. As I will be filming outside for most of my video I can take the aspects of using light reflectors and the organisation of timing. There are other extras in the music video that needed to be directed and as I could have other people in my video I should learn how to organise them.

In this video by You Me At Six it is all being filmed outside so there would have to be a lot of planning about the weather and the shadows they are making. There are a lot of aspects of live performances but there are other things going on in the video as well. It is all linked to the song and the message they are trying to put across.

In this video by Plan B there is a clear storyline of gangs and drug related  and some dramatic scenes. It includes a lot of street dancing. The video has good chorography and has aspects of fire. There is also some performance of playing the piano as well as singing in the video.

Print advert research

This advert is successful as it stands out and looks relevant to the genre. The layout is is effective and the images are bold.

The colours are bold and stand out. I could take ideas from the layout for my own advert. The image is smaller so the focus is on the reviews which are positive.

The image is the main focus of the advert is it big and bold. It is very simplistic and the writing is organised.

The advert is very dark and sinister which relates well to the genre. It is has all the important information in white so it stands out.

Digipak research

Different layouts

Styles

This digipak has a simple design but it is effective as it has strong imagery and focuses on the animated images that represent the band members.
This digipak relates to the genre and theme of the band. It is also a unique design.

Music video effects

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXpdmKELE1k
This is a video by the Swedish House Mafia called save the world tonight. In the beginning of the music video it is all in slow motion as nothing important really happens. As the beat drops and the music is faster everything goes in fast forward, As there are some dramatic scenes the video generally has a low contrast to make it look dark and dangerous.

Where have you been by Rihanna has many effects throughout the video. It firstly uses mirroring to make the lighting and imagery more effective. There is a lot of camera shaking to make the chorography more dramatic and exciting. There is some split screening to have a mid shot of all the dancers then a close up of rihanna in the other screen.

Royalty free track -krestovsky flickering love

Indie-rock
The song has quite an upbeat yet relaxed tone. The lyrics are quite appropriate to the song, they represent love nut not in a mainstream way.
When listening to this song i can imagine it going with people going about their everyday lives maybe in a city scene.
elements i would include:
In some parts the band could be playing live but focusing mainly on other people in the video.
different stories depending on the person, easy to follow.

other ideas:
in the country side to match the relaxed tone of the song.

Music Video Director

Robby Starbuck.

Robby Starbuck is an underground music director who has worked with bands such as Pierce the Veil, Asking Alexandria, Smashing Pumpkins and Every Avenue who all follow a rock/punk genre.
In a lot of his videos he has directed there are a lot of shots of the band playing their instruments and appears to be singing and playing live which is a conventional aspect of rock videos. A lot of rock fans prefer to see the bands they like live.

In his visual style he uses a lot of extreme close ups on the front man on the band and shakes the camera in sync with the bass beat to add an effect of a heavy metal genre. Robby Starbuck also uses extreme slow motion on the narrative story including speeding up the tempo of the shot so it creates a fast forward effect. This emphasizes the heavy style of the genre. he uses colour gradients in his visual style with colours such as red, blue and green mid tones that are adjusted to create a                purposeful low quality film effect.

The weather is used to mimic the mood of the song, in the minor keyed songs he uses a lot of rain and thunder. In contrast with the major keyed songs there are a lot of brightness and high saturation. Robby Starbuck was underground right up until now he is moving onto more mainstream artsists such as Akon.
